Position Overview
Substitute Teachers at The Friends School of Atlanta are responsible for maintaining the school’s supportive and inclusive learning environment when regular teachers are absent. Substitutes are expected to implement lesson plans, supervise students, and model FSA’s Quaker values throughout the school day.
Essential Tasks and Responsibilities
- Provide instruction and classroom management according to teacher-provided lesson plans.
- Foster a reflective classroom environment that emphasizes respect, collaboration, and individual responsibility.
- Utilize differentiation and small-group instruction to meet diverse learning needs.
- Supervise students in classrooms, during transitions, and in common spaces.
- Attend and participate in Silent Meeting on Fridays from 8:30–9:00 a.m. when applicable.
- Uphold the Quaker values of respect, equality, and community in all interactions.
- Complete required timesheets accurately and submit them by the payroll deadline.
Grade-Level and Program Assignments
Substitutes may be placed in a variety of settings, including:
- PreK3–Grade 4 (Elementary School)
- One or two teachers per classroom (depending on class size).
- Note: PreK3 is licensed by Bright From The Start; substitutes must be fingerprinted by DECAL and added to the system.
- Grades 5–8 (Middle School)
- Single-subject classrooms following a block schedule (1.5-hour classes, with shorter Wednesday periods).
- Students travel together in homeroom groups in grades 5 and 6.
- Special Area Teachers
- May follow schedules different from core academic teachers.
- Includes art, music, P.E., innovation lab, Spanish and environmental science.
- Aftercare (3:00–6:00 p.m.)
- Additional substitute opportunities are often available during aftercare hours.
Qualifications
- Experience working with children in an educational or youth-centered setting is preferred.
- Ability to manage classrooms effectively and positively.
- Commitment to FSA’s mission and Quaker values.
- Flexibility, reliability, and professionalism.
- For PreK3: DECAL fingerprinting and background check required.
- First Aid/CPR training for Pediatrics
Compensation
- $20 per hour
- Substitutes must complete weekly timesheets, submitted seven days prior to the 18th of each month (payday).
